Safe Behaviour Expectations
MSE OHS Discipline Process
Just like working for a major engineering company, working or studying un-safely at MSE has consequences.
Not only is there a chance you may be injured (or worse), but staff and/or students found to be working/studying un-safely can have disciplinary action taken against them under the Melbourne School of Engineering OHS Discipline Process. This is a “three strikes” procedure that has direct consequences for the person(s) found to be working un-safely.

This process document is available to all staff members and postgraduate students.
If you cannot access this procedure and wish to view a copy, please email the MSE OHS Unit mse-ohs@unimelb.edu.au to request a copy.
Laboratory entry point signs
Laboratories have been risk assessed to determine the types of Personal Protective Equipment that is required to be worn by persons working/studying in the laboratory, in order to ensure the safety of all persons in the laboratory space.
The “Safety Rules” that indicate the types of PPE that must be worn by all persons inside a laboratory space are displayed at entry points to the laboratory on signs like the one below. Even if you are visiting the laboratory, you need to ensure you follow the poster “Safety Rules”.
Failure to comply with the posted laboratory “Safety Rules” will result in action being taken against you under the MSE OHS Discipline Procedure.

Waste Chemical Disposal Process
MSE has its own Waste Chemical Disposal Process.

Finding OHS Information
Melbourne School of Engineering OHS website
staff.unimelb.edu.au/engineering/fohs/ohs
Whilst this website is an intranet site, it is accessible by staff and RHD students by using your University of Melbourne login information.
The MSE OHS website includes:
- Emergency contact lists (first aid officers, chief wardens, floor wardens)
- OHS Forms
- OHS Procedures
- Much, much more …
Noticeboards
Each MSE building has an OHS noticeboard where recent and relevant OHS information is displayed.
Emails
The MSE OHS Unit use email as a way to mass communicate safety information to staff and Post Grads on staff email lists. Emails can be about regular occurrences or about events that have occurred and had a negative impact on the management of health and safety.
Health & Safety Representatives (HSR’s)
HSR’s are local, volunteer staff members who have an active interest in ensuring we all have a safe workplace.
While not safety professionals, local HSR’s are valuable points of contact for staff and students looking for OHS information.
The HSR is not there to do your safety for you, rather to assist you completing your own safety obligations.

Emergency personnel
Staff from each MSE building have volunteered to be First Aid Officers and Emergency Wardens.
First Aid Officers are trained in basic first aid and undergo regular refresher training.
Emergency Contact Lists can be located in various locations throughout all MSE buildings near building exits, on OHS noticeboards and next to first aid kits.
How to arrange access
Once you have been issued with an ID Card, you can arrange your building access.
Access to buildings comes in the form of swipe access and keys. Depending upon where you need access to will determine whether you receive swipe access, key access or a combination of both.
To organise your building access, your supervisor needs to send a request via MSE Facilities webpage “Log a Request” function containing the following information:
- Your name
- Your staff / student number
- The building and room location/s that you require access to
Access on swipe cards is usually completed within 24–48 hours after receipt of the supervisor’s official request.
If keys are to be issued, the MSE Facilities Officer will contact you via email to inform you when your keys may be collected. Not all keys are held in stock so the issuing of keys can take up to three weeks.
