Encryption, ID theft, rising sea levels and bamboo for construction - here are the MSE stories getting media attention this week.

  • Associate Professor Vanessa Teague contributed to an article in New Scientist Australia's anti-encryption measures leading to widespread concerns over civil liberties. Download a PDF of this here [internal use only].
  • Associate Professor Teague also appeared on ABC Radio discussing how a driver's licence is described as the "golden ticket" for identity thieves. List to this interview here.
  • Victoria's Great Ocean Road is being threatened by climate change and over-popularity among tourists. Professor Ian Young discussed how rising sea levels caused by climate change could worsen the impact in the future for The Guardian.
  • Bamboo may soon become a common material for use in Australian construction, with academics exploring the properties of this giant grass. Professor Priyan Mendis spoke about this research with Domain.
  • MSE alumna and Robogals founder Marita Cheng has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia, as reported in the Adelaide Advertiser. [internal use only]
  • An editorial in The Age called for scientific research funding to be a top priority for Australia, citing examples of some of the country's esteemed researchers, including Professor Graeme Clark for his 2013 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award.
