Annual reports: All Faculty Trust Fellows submit short reports on the progress of their research, submitted through SmartyGrants. A copy of the report template, including the Certification page can be found here.
Successful recipients of these fellowships are eligible to receive $10,000 per year (pro rata) of Grant-In-Aid funding, which is supplementary to the fellow's salary, to support legitimate research expenses including consumables, travel and publication costs.
All trust fellows must submit short reports on the progress of their research, which will be reviewed by the Faculty, as per the position descriptions for each fellowship. The Research Support & Evaluation team will issue reporting templates to current fellows and monitor report submissions, however it is ultimately the fellow's responsibility to ensure the timely submission of reports.
Faculty Trust Support Funding
In addition to the above fellowships, the Faculty also manages other sources of trust funding from time to time, which can range from fellowships to project based opportunities across different fields of research. These trust funded opportunities have their own specific conditions and eligibility requirements and will be advertised through the Research Resource Report email bulletin.

Michael Hirshorn Medical Research Commercialisation Fund
The Michael Hirshorn Medical Research Commercialisation Fund is the result of a generous donation from Dr Janice Hirshorn and Dr George Jacobs in recognition of Dr Michael Hirshorn OAM, who was a graduate of the University of Melbourne and passionate about the commercialisation of biomedical inventions. Dr Hirshorn was also a co-founder and Chief Executive of the company behind the “bionic ear”, Cochlear, and a founding director of the sleep disorders company Resmed.
One of the most significant challenges for commercialisation activities in universities is securing funding for translation of research discoveries into product concepts - essentially, the demonstration that discoveries can be translated into a product concept that has the potential to solve a significant health and wellbeing issue.
This award supports initiatives that are focused on the commercialisation of biomedical research that is conducted through the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. This includes work conducted in partnership with other Faculties within the University, or with external research partners.
